California Curriculum Collaborative Offers Regional Workshops

The California Curriculum Collaborative, a partnership of Pivot Learning and, is proud to present a series of regional workshops designed to guide districts through the tools and processes crucial to curriculum adoption. The free, hands-on sessions will help district teams strategize the most beneficial way to select instructional programs according to the individual needs of districts, teachers, students, and the entire learning community.

Pivot Learning and launch the California Curriculum Collaborative, a new resource for instructional materials adoption

Oakland, CA – Today, February 7th, 2017, Pivot Learning (, an Oakland-based nonprofit supporting dozens of CA school districts to improve college and career readiness, launched the California Curriculum Collaborative ( in partnership with, a national nonprofit providing rigorous evidence-based reviews of K-12 instructional materials. offers free independent analysis of K-12 Math and English Language Arts materials from national publishers as well as best practices for curriculum adoption.

This month, as our educator review teams continue to put in hundreds of hours completing reviews, I'm excited to not only reflect on our progress from 2016, but share our timeline for publishing more reviews in early 2017.

We now have almost 200 grade/course instructional materials reviewed at These reports represent the work of accomplished educators meeting weekly for thousands of hours over the past year. It is the dedication of these educators that led to a great 2016 in which we:

Looking forward, we have approximately 100 grade and course level reviews that will be published in the next few months. We will post these new reviews – including our inaugural K-2 ELA reports – starting in February and continuing throughout the spring. Know the Materials

Until recently, I’d been trying to do this all from scratch, which led to lots of sleepless nights and hours and hours of lesson planning and searching the internet for quality lessons. Kids Deserve to Learn from the Best Materials

We caught up with Jana Bryant, Math Instructional Coach with Daviess County Public Schools in Kentucky. Jana shares how rigorous college and career-ready standards can improve and deepen student learning, and in order to reach these standards, how much what is taught in the classroom matters. She also shares more about her experience as an reviewer.

Why do quality instructional materials matter for teachers and kids?

Teachers and students deserve resources that are up-to-date with the technology that is present in their homes and schools.  

Kids deserve to learn from the best materials. Teachers should be able to spend the majority of their time engaging with and offering feedback to their students, and refining their own instruction. Many teachers spend too much time searching for and creating their own standards-aligned resources. Teachers use instructional materials as a crucial guide to indicate if they are holding students and themselves to the correct level of expectations intended by the standards.
